New access provider/partial host!

Over the last MONTH I’ve been trying to get our ADSL reconnected in the new flat. It seems that keeping the same telephone number produces untold problems for my previous host. After twice ordering a new account online, and twice getting the “everything’s ok” page, but no service (and some rather random emails), and after several fruitless and frustrating phone calls to their customer support, I’ve given up on PIPEX. Which is a shame, really – whilst others have had untold problems, the last year with Pipex as my service provider has been excellent and I’d never had any cause for compaint. But really, I mean – I’ve been a customer for a year, I’m trying to arrange to pay MORE money to them and they won’t help????

So I’m now midway through the connection process with Plusnet, and although the proof of the pudding etc. etc. so far I’m pretty impressed. Just look at the specs:

  • 250Mb cgi/php/mysql-enabled webspace
  • webstats
  • unlimited mailboxes, with catchall
  • Mailing lists (for <100 people I think, but hey...)
  • Fax2Email (not working at the mo’, but…)
  • 512/256 ADSL service (hopefully!)

All this and its only £22!

It seems unlikely, doesn’t it. They also offer uk domains for an additional £1.17/month, which I think we’ll take advantage of. So it looks like the restaurant reviews will get their own URL once it all goes active and I’ve reprogrammed for PHP rather than ASP.

Also mad is how much info is available – they have this query tracking system into which it would seem any actions regarding your account are posted. You can send queries through here and they monitor responses – its quite a change in comparision.

Still – we’ll see once the service is up & running (fingers crossed).

Wish I’d spotted this earlier…

Major linkage in this article, which currently causes havoc with the front page fragments – hence this intro text. Ok, in work early this morning and quickly checking emails & websites before starting and came across a few things linked from B3ta which made me snigger. Top of today’s hit parade was topical for the weekend in the UK (and the US, entertainingly) –, a highly developed and beautifully mature piece of social satire. Or knob gags. Or bugger all actually, except an exhortation to keep your hands off the wire and send a donation to the RNIB. Brilliant. So much so, I’m going to include the little animated image here:

Sorry for linking directly to the images – can’t currently copy them here due to connection probs

He-he-helium balloons

Last night we bid farewell to Karen, in an entertaining drinks & nibbles do in the largest meeting room. I’d been asked to prepare a “This is your life”-type video tribute to her, and so had asked around and managed to procure a few photographs, persuaded her with my mendacious charm to let me take a few photographs, and sneakily shot a tiny bit of video as well. This worked very well – in no more than 10 seconds of video we got a gem! With the goodbye speech given in suitable style, I think everyone enjoyed it – even Karen.

The balloons came later. They’d been distributed around the room as decorations, but further into the evening, as the empty bottle stacked up, various staff members took their turn at helium babbling. (Un)fortunately, I still had a camera handy and recorded many of them in their finest…er….minutes. A quick edit this morning and we have embarrassment fit for a king. I’d love to make it available here, but…well it wouldn’t be fair, it probably wouldn’t be funny if you didn’t know them, and to quite honest that’s enough reasons!

PALM BEACH: Office improvements

I’ve just been quickly looking through the comments on the last few posts from Palm Beach, and I’ve got to agree with Marc’s comments attached to this entry. I’m back at work now, and I’m compiling a list of facilities/improvements for the London management team to consider:

  • Fresh orange juice until 11am
  • Bagels & jam & cream cheese
  • Unlimited soft drinks
  • Unlimited ice
  • Lots of clean glassware
  • “Desk” service
  • Cookies! Lovely cookies!

I could go on, but I’m not going to. As Marc said, having to make your own bed is such a chore…and Lou, I’m waiting for your comment…!
